Time goes by so fast when there are lots going on in life, and documenting it became the last thing I remember to do.

Ever since I celebrated my anniversary of stepping into the world of DSLR (and blogged about it in my last post), I have bought a new camera, gone to more photography classes, done many different projects, and most importantly - given more thoughts about how to be better.

Becoming better is vague and there are so many dimensions to it, but defining my aesthetics or point of view is a big part of my struggle. How do you refine both technical and artistic aspects of the craft, so it becomes uniquely your own?

Few days ago, I was fortunate enough to attend Michael Kenna's lecture at the Cincinnati Art Museum. I've talked about him in my prior post and I've loved his work ever since I started learning photography. So it was really an exciting opportunity to finally meet him in person.

Michael shared many stories along with his works, and let us know more intimately about who he is as a photographer and how his journey has been. One and a half hour felt like thirty minutes - time went by so fast! He engaged the audience as if he's just having a personal conversation with friends. I felt his passion and wisdom in his speech. It was an enlightening experience.

Michael's lecture reassured me that establishing your unique point of view is an evolving process. Your past experience, whether conscious or subconscious, already defines part of your style. With this basis, you take on a never-ending journey of self discovery. You have multiple conversations with yourself and your subjects. You start from the surface, like everyone else, and you go deeper. Michael thinks that he's been going around in circles, except that his circles become bigger and bigger. I think this analogy makes so much sense - you don't become someone else, you never depart from what's in your soul, but you use what you've got and try to expand the energy as much as you can. You will come back to where you started, but every time you come back, you are a more mature and wise individual.

So with that, I put aside my self-doubts and carry on. I hope this blog will continue to be the documentation of my self-exploration, my journey in circles.
I guess time moves much faster when you're passionate about certain things in life!

When I first started learning tennis, my instructor told me that people generally learn most at the beginning and then after you get better, improvements come in much smaller increments and that's when the real challenge begins. I of course never became a real good tennis player, but I went through the learning curve and understand what he meant.

As I move on to the 2nd year of my photography study, I remember what it was like when I first started playing tennis. Looking back this past year, I can see my skills improved noticeably. I still take lots of crappy photos, but at least I kind of know what I am doing now. But as I continue to learn more and be happy with what I've achieved, I should also remember that the real challenge is always ahead and the learning never ends.

Last week I was at the Cincinnati Art Museum for my new AAC Photojournalism course assignment. This was my second visit and it's been 6 months since my first. I am breaking the rule by showing 6 photos in this post because I want to celebrate my newbie achievement. With this post, I can now pat myself in the back, be happy with what I've done so far, and look forward to many more years of learning!
I was at an Ohio River photography exhibition last week. All the works were taken by Cincinnati Enquirer's photojournalists. They are all inspiring works and make me even more sure that photography is not an art of the moment but an art of the collective moments from the past. Only when a photo tells a story of the past, it strikes a chord in people's heart.

These photos were taken in the summer when my parents visited. We were at Mt. Adams looking out to Kentucky. It was a hot but beautiful day.
I am grateful to be part of the excitements especially because I learned to shoot fireworks with my ancient Nikon D70!

First of all, you really should have a shutter remote (along with a tripod) when shooting fireworks because fireworks is spontaneous (for the viewers at least) and you don't know what you'll get until you see it. Putting the camera on a timer is just simply crazy- and that's exactly how I did it.

Because my camera is old (8 years and counting) so buying a shutter remote is not a smart investment, especially knowing I will be upgrading my camera in the near future and it may not work on the new camera. So it's my choice to live with the timer situation for now.

There's a minimum 2-second wait time for my timer so I needed to anticipate the
fireworks and pressed the shutter beforehand. This means taking fireworks was a hit-and-miss exercise for me. I should be proud of what I got and not dwell on what I couldn't get.

I want to highlight the last photo here - it was taken at the Labor Day Riverfest, in the rain, with an umbrella, standing on top of the muddy Kentucky Newport levee, looking out to Cincinnati. Not great work but it sure was a messy and interesting experience!
How time flies and sadly, summer is long gone...

I complained about the hot summer in Cincinnati and I'm sure I'll complain it again next summer. But I know I'll miss the hot humid air more and more as the weather gets colder and colder.

My Nikon D70 is 8-years old and the ISO technology back then is nothing like the DSLRs today. So when I photograph in low-night situations, I have no choice but to crank up the ISO setting and that just means the photos will end up with lots of unwanted noise.

The B&Ws here are the outcome of these situations. I've spent a lot of post-processing time on these because the originals are just awful. I was not happy with the color in the originals but I am quite happy with I was able to salvage by turning them into B&Ws.
At the beginning, I have the tendency to capture people looking at arts and just accept what are being presented. But now, I am more interested in how people and arts co-exist in the frame, more like equal partners.

These were taken at MOMA on a Free Friday Night. Note to myself - Free Friday Night is a perfect time for people watching and photographing but definitely not a good time to enjoy arts quietly!

I'm a coward, I know. Taking advantage of people that are engrossed in their mobile world is taking the easy way out. I know...

Of all the styles of photography, taking portrait photography is my biggest fear. This is why I am inspired to be any type of photographer but a wedding photographer. I don't think I am capable of handling so much human emotions in one day and still be able to create beautiful images of supposedly the most important day of people's life.

I know one day I'll have to overcome this fear and embrace it. I know I will. Hey, at least I've stop shooting people from the back all the time. But in the mean time, just let me take a few more baby steps...
Your neck can seriously hurt by aiming the camera up all the time.

My AAC instructor Lisa pointed out before how I love shooting reflections. Looking at the photos posted here, I have to admit that I am indeed a sucker for all sorts of reflections!

What I've done so far:

After purchasing a solid tripod and learning the settings of my camera timer, I've managed to start shooting more landscapes at night.

For B&W, I've put more attention on how light/shadow and texture impacts the image, and have been looking at more B&W photography books to get inspirations and ideas.

As for using external Flash, I bought myself a nice Nikon SB-700 speedlight as a birthday present, read a few blogs and watched a few youtube videos, but that's about it...

May not look like I've accomplished much, but my latest trip to Chicago did result in a few decent B&Ws and one of them was shot at night (Wrigley building). So I'll say that my learning plan is still on track?
Lots went on since then - taxes, traveling, family visiting etc. Happy to say that life has been good and I've been continue shooting!

Since my cherry blossom and neighborhood project, I did another assignment in March before finishing the photography class at AAC. I chose to use my flimsy little tripod and spent a few consecutive evenings outside of National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. What a beautifully designed building and I am amazed at how successful this exercise turned out to be. I've learned a lot and this has ignited my interest in both night photography and architecture photography.

While I was there, I thought of an interview on Michael Kenna's Hokkaido project. Of course I'm no where near his caliber but I realized at that moment how much I enjoy shooting things like this and similar to Michael, I can spend a long time, alone, framing the shots, trying different exposures, and experimenting different perspectives. Just being able to explore the serenity of a place with no distractions is already a wonderful experience on its own.

The class kind of knew that if the weather gets much warmer, cherry blossoms would start blooming and we would be able to take lots of wonderful photos. Luckily that's exactly what happened on St. Patrick's Day. The weather was wonderful - the sky was blue with beautiful clouds.

I love when the cherry blossoms first bloom in spring. You don't have any green leaves on the tree yet and the flowers are so fresh and clean, you just wish they could stay like that forever.

Amazingly, Cincinnati is full of cherry trees and you can see the blossoms everywhere you go. I feel so blessed to be able to experience this.

I took these shots with my 18-200mm lens with no tripod. I had to drop my arms and take a break every few shots to make sure that my arms are not too tired from holding the camera for too long. I could feel my arms shaking and I wasn't sure if that would cause motion blur when I zoom in so much with no tripod and everything was on autofocus. I wish I have a macro lens and a solid tripod for these shots because I am sure I can get more beautiful and abstract photos if I get much closer! Oh well, they will have to go on to my B&H's wish list...
This is a pretty open-ended subject and it certainly allows us to present a series of cohesive photos with narratives.

I've determined to use this project to practice my B&Ws so I can get more feedback from my instructor Lisa. So here it is, a day in my life - just an ordinary day.

We're all inspired to be extraordinary. But sometimes, you wake up in the morning wishing you can just be ordinary. There are no expectations to accomplish anything, no anticipations to achieve anything, we can just live through the day as is.

This may sound uninspiring but really, being ordinary has its beauty. A day like this means you don't have unnecessary dramas and chaos. I think we all deserve to have a day like this every once in a while. This is certainly the cheapest form of therapy. After an ordinary day, we can have more energy to charge forth and face many unknowns in life.

Moving away from New York City is a very sad thing. I felt really connected to the city. It really is a photographer's paradise with endless inspirations. Having said that, the move to Cincinnati is a great opportunity for me to shoot a very different environment. It definitely allows me to gain new perspectives.

After arriving here shortly, I eagerly registered for a photography project course at Art Academy of Cincinnati. Here is my first project - hands. Three very different approaches yet similar in some ways. I'm glad that I got creative with this. Hopefully I can continue to push the boundaries and test my capability.
So last weekend, after my visit to B&H (what an amazing store), I decided to make a trip uptown to revisit a few of my favorite artworks.

Met's lighting condition was quite dim that day. Maybe it's because I was there late in the afternoon and it's already getting dark outside, so there was not much light coming from the skylight. Using the highest ISO setting of 1600, a lot of my photos turned out to be super noisy and honestly, somewhat disgusting. The reason why the photos in this post turned out okay is because the subjects were very close to the display lights. So this tells me that I need to be smarter in dim lighting situations - maximizing the available light source and not relying on high ISO all the time.

There's a bigger realization - after coming home and reviewing all the photos, I discovered that if there's no clear intent and I just go with innate preferences, I may never really improve. The photos are not too bad but really, the composition and the style are what I'm used to and have taken something similar before. The second photo shows a bit of movement with a person walking into the frame. That's something different and I could've experiment more of that. I guess the key is to become more aware of the moment and its surroundings, so you can inject interesting elements on the spot.

Just like being an observer at the museum and looking at the artwork through others, I need to develop different perspectives through the viewfinder too. I know this takes time but it's something I should always think about whenever I pick up the camera.
Night scenes are something I really need to practice more seriously - which means I need to drag my lazy butt out in the cold with a tripod... and maybe with a cup of hot chocolate!

Compare these photos with what I've posted previously, it made me realize how New York is truly an amazing city for photographers. You can pretty much shoot anything and everything, and they can all end up inspiring you one way or another. For example, the first photo here. I was on my way to Penn Station to take the train home, and decided to stop by ICP to look at the Empire State building and its reflection on another high-rise. I never thought I would end up shooting something like this. It just somehow appeared in my viewfinder and I knew I found something magical. I guess sometimes it's all about being at the right place at the right time - with an open mind.

I personally prefer the b&w version. But regardless of individual preferences, it's quite obvious that b&w or color photos, depending on how you present them, tell very different stories.

Some may think that switching the same photo between b&w and colors is a snap, but it's not. A lot of effort is needed to make sure you produce a consistent color tone, texture and feel - especially when you're presenting multiple photos at the same time. I have to say I didn't do such a fantastic job here. The 3rd photo seems almost out of place. It doesn't really have the same vibe as the first two, although I tried to make them look as consistent as possible... This really shows that post-processing is a very import part of the photography workflow. Gosh, I still have so much to learn!
Living in the east coast pretty much means you'll get hit with snowfall many times a year, so I am bracing myself for the worse that's yet to come...

Before the snow storm hit, I was already in New York for my photography class. The week prior, our instructor Brad has asked us to try portrait shots and these are what I came up with. I didn't have much time to do the homework during the week and so had to arrive in New York early enough to take some street portraits before the start of the class.

And of course, I wasn't expecting rain (and certainly not snow later on)! I got so used to the sunny and colorful New York in the past few months and was disappointed with the weather condition. Luckily I got some unexpected shots and they end up being some of the best photos I've ever done.

It's difficult to take street portraits. I didn't want people to think I was rude or intrusive and so I really missed a lot of good candid shots. I know if I want to do more street photography in the future, I need to be more confident and less self conscious about the whole process. Brad showed me a video on Bruce Gilden and it really cracked me up! I felt so much better after learning about what he did to people on the streets.

On a separate note, I've turned these photos into black and white, simply because I've just learned B&W conversion in Lightroom and was very eager to hone my skills. This really ignites my interests in B&W and I hope to do more of this from now on.
I didn't want to go home taking boring practice shots so thought I would walk around 5th Avenue and check out the new UNIQLO flagship store as well.

It's hard to shoot 5th Avenue with the still life concept in mind. I mean, it's a place full of fast moving cars, enthusiastic tourists, and aromatic hot dog vendors! So taking still life shots would probably be the last thing a photographer wants to do.

After walking a block or two, I realize that the store display windows are wonderful subjects for this exercise. They're full of glitz and glams and are very attractive subjects indeed for a non-new yorker like me!

I have to say that this is the type of photo I am comfortable with and I've developed an eye for interesting subjects and composition. Now I really have to start venturing into the unknown by experimenting different shots and stretching the creative mind - so that eventually, I can find my own unique point of view.
It was a nice sunny morning, so what could be better than taking some photos of the platform and the passengers, right? In my mind I could already see the images.

After taking a few shots, to my horror, I noticed that things were barely showing up on my camera's LCD screen! Every photo was literally pitch dark. I mean, I know I have a lot to learn and practice, but really, how could I possibly have photos that are so drastically different than what I saw in the viewfinder?!

It was too early in the morning for me to comprehend what had happened and so I took some extreme measures - switched from aperture priority mode to manual, and cranked the ISO setting all the way up to 1600. And to my relief, photos are starting to show up. But I still couldn't figure out why and was totally demoralized!

So as it turned out, I set my exposure compensation to -5, which means all my pictures are completely underexposed. This of course was corrected with the help of my wonderful instructor Kate.

I guess the moral of the story is, always pay attention to the data in your viewfinder because your camera is smart enough to give you the warning signs and you better believe what it says. Oh and also, it's inevitable that you have to stumble a few times before you know how to shoot properly. I guess that's just part of the learning process. The good news is, after the incident, I know I will never make the same mistake again.

Here are few of the photos taken that day. Luckily, I managed to salvage them with some simple Lightroom adjustments. But the reality is, some shots were impossible to recover and those picture-perfect moments - of people chatting happily before boarding the train, were lost forever...
The cameras are great but I know I will need to move on to DSLR one day if I want to progress as a photographer. So after the first digital photography course using my second-hand Nikon D70 (thanks Dad), I've decided to set up this blog to document my new journey.

These photos were taken last weekend in Manhattan and honestly, I am not sure if they can be considered as a set of cohesive work. I was also debating whether I should showcase a set of 5 or 6 photos as opposed to 3. But I find that if I can convey a short and sweet message with 3, I should leave it at that. Plus, this will allow me to post more often, which means I am more likely to commit to this project longer!

So here it is. My new beginning. I definitely want to thank ICP for having great instructors and facility for people to learn photography. It's definitely a dream come true for me. I have already registered for another set of class starting this coming weekend. Can't wait to learn more and of course, create more!
